Sepia Tone Jazz Solist

Gottsu’s popular Jazz Soloist has undergone extensive renovation and is now reborn as the “Jazz Solist” – renamed using the German language. The new Jazz Solist has been carefully refined and improved in its entirety – from subtle changes in the shape, such as a higher baffle, to the addition of a copper shank ring.  In recent testing and development using the metal element copper, we have found that affixing a copper ring to the shank significantly improves the tone and playability of the mouthpiece.  The Jazz Soloist gives the musician easy control over the music; it is extremely responsive and produces a round, gentle tone – now clearer and more beautiful than before.

One unique and fascinating quality of copper is how quickly and extensively it tarnishes.  Under the right conditions and with enough time, the freshly-polished pink color will soon become reddish-orange, then brown, and eventually even a bluish-green.  You may choose whether to regularly polish it to maintain its shiny pink color or to simply enjoy the natural aging.

“Many people from the Japanese music industry asked me to make a mouthpiece like the Soloist.  I was curious to try with my technology, so I made this model. I referred to the design of the vintage mouthpiece, and made adjustments to make it better and appropriate for today’s music style.

—Masahiko Goto

“Just Tried first time at the NAMM show and fell in Love with that Piece! You automatically hear Joe Henderson in your ears when you play it. Soloist chamber, but I can blow more air inside as in the original and get more volume, which was always missing in those mouthpieces.  It was the absolute star at the NAMM show; every great player wanted this piece, also, because it’s different from the others on the market.”

—Tony Lakatos on the original Gottsu Jazz Soloist
